Upcoming Finals Week? Ways to Stay Relaxed Before Exams

By: Brynn Straley

Staying Relaxed Before Finals Week

Finals week is often the most stressful time of the semester for college students. Between late-night study sessions, last-minute projects, and the pressure to perform well, it can feel overwhelming. However, staying relaxed and maintaining a healthy mindset is key to success. Here are some practical ways to unwind and prepare yourself mentally and physically for the week ahead!

Plan Ahead to Avoid Cramming

We all know Kate Cheung on TikTok with her killer all-night study sessions before exams. However, the biggest source of stress during finals is feeling unprepared. Avoid this by creating a study schedule that spreads out your workload. Break your material into smaller chunks and focus on one subject at a time. Not only will this make the workload manageable and give your brain time to digest all the content.

Get Moving

Exercise is a proven stress reliever. Whether it’s a quick yoga session, a run around campus, or even dancing to your favorite playlist in your room, physical activity helps release endorphins and boosts your mood. Bonus: it also helps you sleep better, which is key to retaining information for exams. I know it’s tempting to be confined to your desk all day, but a small 15-minute walk can go a long way.

Take Breaks Wisely

While it might be tempting to study for hours without pause, your brain needs regular breaks to stay productive. Use the Pomodoro Technique: study for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. During your break, step away from screens and do something calming, like stretching or sipping tea.

Fuel Your Body, Not Just Your Brain

A healthy diet can improve focus and energy levels. Stock up on brain foods like nuts, fruits, and vegetables. Stay hydrated, and limit caffeine to avoid burnout. Don’t just chug 5-hour energies and Monsters, but stay active, and healthy, and you’ll find yourself much more energized and ready for the week ahead.

Prioritize Sleep

All-nighters might seem like a rite of passage during finals, but sleep is your secret weapon. Aim for 7-8 hours a night to help your brain process and retain the information you’ve studied.

Final Thoughts

Finals week is tough, but it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. By taking care of yourself and planning, you’ll feel more confident and relaxed heading into exams. Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection. Good luck—you’ve got this!
