Balance is something I have learned to value deeply during my time in college. I believe finding a way to combine passions and academics through involvement in student organizations and clubs is essential. Between being active in multiple organizations, working a part-time job, setting academic goals, and trying to soak in every moment of my senior year at JMU, I have picked up a few strategies for thriving in a busy environment. Sticky notes with my “to-do”s and deadlines are scattered everywhere, but I have found additional methods to make a hectic lifestyle more manageable.
Utilize Your Calendar
Whether you prefer a paper planner or a digital calendar, having a system in place to plan your day is key. I have found block scheduling especially helpful for balancing my academic and extracurricular commitments. This involves designating specific chunks of time for studying, working on tasks for student organizations, and even setting aside personal time. Being intentional with how you spend your time can help you stay organized and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Focus on Your Commitments
I firmly believe that when you commit to something, it is important to stick with it and give forth your best effort. That being said, it is equally important not to overbook yourself. Instead of trying to do everything, immerse yourself fully in the activities you are passionate about. By focusing on fewer commitments, you will be able to contribute meaningfully and get more out of each experience.
Celebrate Your Achievements: Amid the whirlwind of weekly tasks, it is easy to forget to take a step back and appreciate all that you have accomplished. Make it a point to pause and celebrate your wins, no matter how small they may seem. Recognizing your progress not only boosts morale but helps you stay motivated in the long run.
Balancing academics, extracurriculars, and personal life can be a challenge, but it is also an opportunity to develop valuable skills for the future and post-graduation. By utilizing your calendar, staying focused on your commitments, and celebrating your achievements, you can thrive during those long and hectic days. These days will soon be behind us and we will miss them, so my final piece of advice is to enjoy it while you can.
