A College Student's Guide to Staying Motivated During the Midterm Slump

Juliette Linsalata

By: Juliette Linsalata

With midterms coming up, it can be hard for college students to stay motivated and many can find themselves feeling “burnt out” or under enormous amounts of stress. It’s the point of the year when the fun and excitement of beginning new classes dies down and the pressure of maintaining good grades kicks in. Keeping your motivation going throughout the middle of the year can seem impossible, but with some tips, you will push through and ace those midterms coming your way.

Tip #1: Setting Goals

One piece of advice that can be helpful for those struggling to keep their motivation throughout the middle of the semester is to set goals for yourself. Planning and scheduling your days and times can be extremely helpful in staying motivated and on track with specific tasks. Getting a planner, or utilizing a calendar application can assist in tracking your progress on goals and keep you organized at this stressful point in the semester.

Tip #2: Take Time for Yourself

Another tip for college students to stay motivated during the semester is to take time for yourself. Without taking time for yourself, you can find yourself burning out and losing your motivation. Rewarding yourself for a long day of studying with a nice meal or just hanging out with your roommates can be good examples of taking time for yourself.

Tip #3: Changing your Study Location

Along with tip #2, changing your study location can motivate you to keep studying and pushing through during the middle-of-the-semester slump. Try finding a new coffee shop, corner of the library, or new building on campus to stay on track with your studying.

Tip #4: Reminding Yourself of your “Why”

With so much studying, and being overwhelmed with work it can be hard to remember “why” you are doing this, to begin with. Whether it is to reach your goal of graduation, land your dream job, or prove to yourself you can secure a good grade, it is important to note these reasons and remind yourself “why” you are doing this.

Tip #5: Study Groups for Support

In times of intense studying, it can be hard to find time for socialization and communication with others. Forming study groups with peers can be a nice way to mix studying and doing work, helping motivate other students to keep going during the semester. It also is a nice way to check in with peers and communicate with each other so you can reach your fullest potential academically.

Hopefully, by following these tips, you can maintain the motivation to get through the daunting midterm season. It is okay to have those tough days, especially as a college student with so many assignments and exams looming over your head. If you’re feeling stressed out within the next few weeks, try out one of these tips to help.
